Abstract
In an attempt to clarify the effect of whole body X-irradiation on the protein content of the mouse duodenum, and to observe the possible radioprotective action of reduced glutathione(GSH), a whole body X-irradiation of 1, OOOr was given to albino mouse either singularly or immediately after injecting GSH intraperitoneally to mouse 1mg-per gm of body weight.
Protein content was measured by the method described by Lowry et al., using Folin phenol reagent, and the experiment was performed at 1, 6, 12 and 24 hours post-irradiation, and the comparison was
made with the control.
1 The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. The protein content of the normal mouse duodenum was 50.3¡¾2.3mg/gm wet wt.
2. The protein content of the duodenum in the X-irradiated group increased at one hour after the irradi
ation, but the recovery to the control value was noted after six post-irradiation hour.
3. Reduced glutathione(GSH) produced a slight increase in the protein content of the mouse duodenum
at 12 hours after the injection.
4. When the injection of GSH and X-irradiation were combined, the duodenal protein content showed a tendency of decrease throughout the experiment. However, the recovery to the control value was observed at 12 and 24 experimental hours.
